Bookish Excuse

UPDATE: Done! Download and listen to Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-madinah and Meccah!

Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah and MeccahPersonal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah and Meccah by Richard Francis Burton

I'm currently recording and editing parts of the book's audio version. Coming from a third generation mutawwif family, this book touches the deepest vein in my Saudi heritage.

Yea, I really did put all three words in a single sentence, didn't I? Let's do it again and watch the fireworks go off.
My.
Saudi.
Heritage.

Did you feel that? Wow.

The reason why I'm blogging about this (other than apologizing for recent excessive blogging hiatus) is because we're short on Proof Listeners. I want am trying to finish all recordings - Insha Llah - before Christmas, and would love if you could lend an ear and inflate a girl's ego by helping send this project into the IMMORTAL embrace of the public domain --  while tinkering with the dishes/laundry/the long drive home.

Think about it. How little you have to suffer (for my English is as broken as my Arabic), in return for that many of ETERNALLY AWESOME KARMA.

Namaste.

  2. This may be a good idea - I remember your melodious and pleasant voice on a previous occasion.

The instructions I read however are pretty comprehensive. So I can't but echo Diana's question ...

By the way I like the irony of a very Muslim subject matter and it's deadline which is "before Christmas" :).

  3. Can you proof listen the unPLed tracks?

So sorry for sounding ambiguous. I should have explained the process.

    It's like this,
    1) a reader reads a chapter from the book the unploads it in the system.

    2) Then someone else proof listens that recorded chapter, follows the standard requirements, such as:
-- Do the intro and disclaimer match the instructions in the first post of the project thread?

-- Are there any long silences or pauses that ought to be edited out? If so, note the time.

-- Are there any repeats, or serious stumbles that ought to be edited out? If so, note the words and the time.
    -- etc.

    Better, I hope?

    Coles,

  5. @ Alia: I listened in to the first 8 - 10 minutes of chapter 17. And enjoyed it like music - not so much the story as well as the reader :).

The one thing which I think was a little disturbing is the obligation to read the footnotes. The reader can't help it, I know, but it tends to reduce the joy of listening. It threatens to turn it into a bumpy ride.

  6. My apologies and deepest thanks for taking on this trouble, Coles. If you push through, don't worry yourself too much to listen/read too carefully. So long that the narration makes sense, I think it's alright.

    Again, thank you.
